Understanding the cholesterol HDL ratio chart is important, because these ratios can help determine the risk for heart disease and help evaluate whether your cholesterol numbers are high or not. Cholesterol readings can include HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides, and the ratio of each can show whether your risk of heart disease is high or low in many cases. HDL is a “good” cholesterol, also known as high density lipoprotein. LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol, because LDL particles can transport cholesterol into the artery wall and start the formation of a plaque.
A cholesterol HDL ratio of 5 to 1 is a good sign, and the ideal ratio is 3.5 to 1. This is when the total, both good and bad cholesterol, is compared to the HDL cholesterol. Another ratio which may appear on these charts is the ratio of HDL to LDL, or LDL to HDL. For the HDL to LDL ratio an ideal number will be a minimum of 0.4 or above, and anything 0.3 or above is considered good.

Exercise can help increase your HDL levels while lowering your LDL levels, and this can result in a better ratio. Including plenty of good cholesterol foods, such as nuts, flaxseed, and certain raw seeds in your diet, can also help change your cholesterol ratios.
