Stem Cell Research: Pros and Cons
Stem cell research therapy has become a major breakthrough in modern medical science since the discovery of antibiotics in the 1940s. Ever since then stem cell research pros and cons have been in the public spotlight.
All major life forms take their origins with the stem cells, which can multiply to form any organ or tissue in the body, like muscles, skin, blood and bones. With the existence of so many life threatening diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, metabolic and immunodeficiency disorders, there’s a strong need in a super therapy or treatment. Stem cell research promises a lot of potential to cure hundreds of diseases, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and many more. However, there’s a strong opposition to stem cell research in fear of human cloning and genetic engineering.

A number of religious and public groups oppose the embryonic stem cell research considering it inhumane and unethical, as the only way to obtain a stem cell is to destroy a human embryo, which is a murder in itself. They propose to direct the federal funding into the umbilical cord stem cell research, which has a lot more advantages over embryonic stem cell therapy. Embryonic stem cells are considered neither stable nor predictable, which may make them prone to develop into tumor masses, as in 20% of all animal study cases.
However, there are a lot of pros of stem cell research, namely, the possibility to regenerate sick blood, bone, skin and muscle cells and give hope to a lot of dying people. There’s also a potential to genetically grow a replacement for a faulty organ or tissue and save millions of patients that are currently waiting for a transplant.
It’s hard to take sides with stem cell research pros and cons, let’s hope that future stem cell research programs provide more answers to all unanswered questions and start saving lives.
