Leading Causes of Infertility in Women

Causes of Infertility in WomenThere are a number of leading causes of infertility in women, and many of these can be treated so that pregnancy becomes possible. One common cause is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which is caused by an infection in the abdomen which becomes chronic and difficult to treat. Resulting scar tissue can cause blocked fallopian tubes, as well as other problems conceiving. A female hormone imbalance can also cause women to suffer from problems with fertility. If the hormones needed for conception and implantation are not available in sufficient amounts than a pregnancy will not occur.

Some other common causes of infertility in women include high estradiol levels and an estrogen deficiency. Both of these conditions can interfere with the normal conception process, and prevent egg production or implantation. Polycystic Ovarian Sydrome can also cause infertility, because instead of an egg forming and being released the egg turns into a cyst, and affects the menstrual cycle and fertility.

There is a connection between endometriosis and infertility for some women. This condition can cause the lining of the uterus thicker, and cause difficulty in becoming pregnant. Some women who have endometriosis will not have any signs of the condition except for difficulty becoming pregnant. Ovulation that is irregular or absent are also causes of infertility in women, because the regular release of an egg from the ovaries and a normal menstrual cycle each month are essential for pregnancy.

Determining which of the common causes of infertility in women can be complex, and may involve many different tests. Tests to determine hormone levels, ovulation, and other components needed for a successful pregnancy can help pinpoint the problem. Once the cause of the infertility has been diagnosed it is usually possible to begin female infertility treatment. The treatment used will depend on the specific infertility cause, and can include hormone supplements, surgery to open blocked tubes, or other methods available.
