Bisphosphonate Therapy for Osteoporosis
Bisphosphonate therapy is one of the most advised methods used to treat osteoporosis, although this treatment option is not right for everyone and you may not be a candidate in some cases. Osteoporosis, also called porous bones by many, is the condition which causes your bones to weaken and break easier. Osteoporosis is usually caused by aging, and there are a number of treatments using bisphosphonates which may be able to slow or even reverse bone loss and treat the condition. These treatments are usually given as an IV infusion, and treatment options include an aredia infusion or a reclast infusion, as well as other infusion therapies which include this ingredient.
After using bisphosphonate therapy for a significant amount of time, usually a minimum of five years, many women develop much stronger and thicker bones and no longer have osteoporosis. These therapies do have some risks involved as well as benefits though, and you should always discuss this treatment with your doctor before starting it. Cardiovascular damage has been reported in some patients, and because this treatment requires an IV there is a puncture wound. In rare cases the puncture wound may become infected. The benefits of bisphosphonate therapy will outweigh the risks in most cases, and usually only one or two infusions are required each month.
The long term health and safety effects of bisphosphonate therapy are not fully known yet, because these drugs have only been used for the last decade or so. In some situations certain biophosphate compounds may increase the risk for specific bone fractures in a small percentage of the population, but the benefits seen for post menopausal osteoporosis are the most promising yet. If you suffer from osteoporosis you do not have to live with this problem because you can get the treatment you need. Even if bisphosphonate therapy is not the right option for you there are other options available as well. The first step is to talk with your doctor and have a bone density test done.
