Antibiotic Associated Colitis Symptoms and Treatment
Antibiotic associated colitis is a condition which is a result of antibiotic medications, or antibacterial drugs, disturbing the normal equilibrium of good bacteria as well as the bad. Most antibiotics have the potential of causing colitis and the diarrhea which is often experienced with chronic colitis. When antibiotic associated colitis occurs, the intestines become inflamed because the c diff bacteria, clinically known as Clostridium Difficile, produce toxins which will activate the condition. Once the intestines are inflamed, diarrhea will be experienced as well.
Although antibiotics are the very causes of antibiotic associated colitis, c diff treatment includes specific antibiotics to fight the bacteria caused by those other medications. Metronidazole, or Flagyl, is often used for milder to more moderated cases. Severe bouts of c diff will be treated with Vancomycin. Such medications have a way of preventing c difficile from sprouting, thus leaving an open door for good bacteria to thrive within the intestines. At times, this condition is recurrent requiring more than one round of treatment.
Consuming probiotics is often suggested when taking medications to treat antibiotic associated colitis. Probiotics are known to restore a better balance in the affected intestines. Ulcerative colitis is another reason for bowel inflammation. Ulcerative colitis treatment includes over the counter antidiarrhea medications. Steroids and aminosalicylates are used for more intensive ulcerative colitis.
Besides the clinical treatment for antibiotic associated colitis, a diet for colitis is also often suggested. First and foremost, 8 to 10 servings of fluid should be consumed on a daily basis for adequate hydration and constipation prevention. At time when colitis is not active, high fiber foods are also suggested. Steaming vegetables may be more digestible than consuming them raw. When colitis is actively flaring, high fiber foods should be avoided to minimize the symptoms. Include protein in the diet like eggs, chicken, meat, and fish. Limit fatty food consumption as well as coffee and alcohol. Avoid foods which produce gas like cabbage or broccoli. But, do include probiotics to aid intestinal healing.
