Adrenal Insufficiency Symptoms in Women
Adrenal insufficiency symptoms are not always prominently noticed as they sometimes occur subtly and slowly before one realizes there is something abnormal. With the slow progression of the disease, one of the first common signs of adrenal insufficiency symptoms is extreme fatigue. Adrenal fatigue symptoms will cause a constant state weariness. This is a result of adrenal exhaustion as the adrenal glands are no longer able to produce necessary hormones for normal functioning. Appetite begins to dwindle along with a loss of weight. Female hormone imbalance will occur as a result of a lacking adequate production of hormones by the adrenal system.
Cortisol, a hormone produced by the pituitary and adrenal system, is lessened causing fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, low blood pressure, all conditions considered to be low cortisol symptoms. Adrenal hyperplasia is a congenital condition causing deficient levels of cortisol to be produced. This genetic condition also causes adrenal insufficiency symptoms in women including abnormal menstrual periods, deeper voices, excess body and facial hair, and abnormal genital appearance.
When adrenal insufficiency symptoms in women occur, not only is there a lack of energy, one may suffer from muscle weakness, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, anxiety, and depression. There will most likely be s low tolerance to cold, as well. A doctor may notice an unusual pigment of skin. Once adrenal insufficiency symptoms are properly diagnosed through appropriate laboratory tests and examination, synthetic hormones will be prescribed to replace low levels of cortisol produced by the adrenal system. With such treatment, side effects may be experienced as well, such as dehydration. Drinking plenty of water is suggested due to this possibility. Often times, blood pressure medications are also prescribed due to the hypotensive effect of adrenal insufficiency. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disorder. The treatment for adrenal insufficiency will be for a lifetime.
